Old buildings in new housing estates
Today, I'll be exploring new subdivisions that don't just hint at their past land use, but actively incorporate it into their theming. Not everything historical needs to be demolished for housing!
This will probably become a series, but today's video includes:
Belle View farm in (unbelievably) Bellevue. Stradling Roe Highway and the Helena River, this former farms homestead and barn have been incorporated into the estate. It was once owned by Edward Robinson, with his successful dairy farm established in 1887. He was a prominent member of Bellevue too, with land on his farm subdivided for the suburb in 1896. He also contributed to the community further by donating land for the school and church. He later lived in a grand house called Melita, which also still stands nearby.
Richmond Raceway. Once situated next to the East Fremantle oval, this trotting track (under the leadership of the Fremantle Trotting Club) operated from the 1920s until 1991! Not everything was demolished, however - with two entrance gates and a pavilion incorporated into the development.
Mindarie Lime Kilns. While there's many former kilns around the Wanneroo area, these are unique since they were situated right on the coast. Built in 1932 by the Quinns Rocks Limestone Company, it was operated by the Cooper family until 1948. It's though that the author of A Fortunate Life, Albert Facey worked in 1934. These days, the kilns have been restored and are part of Cooper Park.
Josip Glavota's house (well, the chimney, at least). Glavota made it big in the Goldfields and transported his cottage from Kalgoorlie to Upper Swan. There he ran a vineyard for many years, which was later operated by his nephew, Milan. The vineyard is now a modern subdivision. While his cottage was intended to be retained, it was sadly destroyed by a storm in 2020. While the chimney survived, the rest of the cottage was rebuilt.
Perry Lakes. Home of the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, the Perry Lakes Sporting Complex in Floreat was Perth's first venue suitable for international sport. While the 30,000-capacity stadium was used for many years afterwards, it was demolished between 2010 and 2012 for an upmarket housing estate. There's plenty of remains within, however - most prominently the 3-storey scoreboard! I also explore what remains of the Athletes Village in City Beach. This is now the Empire Village shopping precinct.
